If diabetes could be prevented, its complications would not be suffered. Researchers are actively pursuing this dream.
Two large studies are underway in North America to see if Type 2 diabetes can be prevented through intervention at a "pre-diabetic" stage. This includes intensive dietary and exercise counselling, and use of the drugs Metformin and Acarbose. Results should be available within the next few years.
The prevention of Type 1 diabetes is also a realistic goal. This is being pursued in Canada and Europe (the ENDIT trial, using Nicotinamide) and in the U.S. and Canada, using oral or injected insulin (Diabetes Prevention Trial). Both trials involve non-diabetics known to be at high risk of developing the disease in the near future.
